Brushes

Brushes are used by a large number of Photoshop painting and editing tools so it is worth getting to know them. They can save you a lot of valuable time and effort when working on some images.

Don't worry if you are using Photoshop 5 the functions work exactly the same only the location has changed. Click here for details

The brush sizes and shapes available appear from the drop down menu in the options bar. You can also customise the brushes for each of the painting and editing tools from this menu.

Some of the other brushes available from the drop down menu on the brushes palette are shown below.

Click on any brush and the Brush Name dialogue box opens confirming its hardness and pixel size. In this case a Soft Round 21 pixel brush.

Tips. To change the size of your brush while working in Photoshop use the ] (square bracket) key to make larger and the [ key to make the brush smaller.

Clicking on the brush itself as shown above, opens the Custom palette.

From this palette you can custom build your own brushes as shown below, this can be handy if you need a brush of a particular size or shape. Moving the sliders on the Diameter and Hardness will change the size and softness of the brush. To adjust the shape and angle rotate the arrow and pull or squeeze the grab handles of the diagram in the preview window. New brushes can be saved by clicking on the folded paper icon in the top right of the palette.
