Creating an Infrared Effect

|
With a few steps we can transform our colour image
taken with a Coolpix 990 to a Infrared looking image.

|
After we have selected our image call up the layers
pallet Window >Show Layers (diagram 1) or strike F7 on the keyboard.
Now duplicate our image by dragging it over the Create New Layer tab
and re-name it IR one. Tip ….by creating
a new layer to work on if anything went horribly wrong you can always
bin the layers and start again.

Working on our new layer we call up the Channel Mixer,
Image >Adjust > Channel Mixer (diagram 2). Tick the Monochrome box and
increase the Green channel to +200%; now reduce the Red and Blue channels
until we are happy with the effect, in this case Red was set at - 36%
and the Blue at - 46%. We also increase the Constant to +4%. (diagram
3) The setting for the Red and Blue channels will vary so try experimenting.

| Now we duplicate our IR one layer by dragging it over the Create New Layer tab as before and re-name this new layer IR two. We blur this layer with Gaussian blur, Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and we select a radius of around 5.0 pixels. (diagram 4) |

| We can now blend all of our layers together. . On our Layers Palette under the Blend Mode we select Screen and then reduce the Opacity to around 40%. (diagram 5) Try some of the other settings under the Blend Mode as they may suit your image. Finally we can flatten our image, Layer > Flatten Layer or click on the corner of the Layers pallet and select Flatten Image from the drop down options, and save our new image. |
